Change of Character

Also called: choch, character change

A specific type of break of structure that signals the END of a trend, not just a pullback — the first sign of a reversal.

Change of character (ChoCh) is a refinement of break of structure. While BoS can happen in either direction (continuation or reversal), ChoCh specifically refers to the FIRST structure break that goes against an established trend. It's the chart's way of saying "the trend has changed character." In an uptrend, a ChoCh happens when price breaks below the most recent significant higher low — the FIRST time this happens after the trend started. That single break doesn't mean the trend is over forever, but it means the immediate trend is questioned and you should look for shorts (or at least stop looking for longs). ChoCh is a Smart Money concept popularized by ICT and SMC traders. The trade idea is that ChoCh marks early trend reversals — get in early, before the broader market notices.
Real trade example

Gold printed a clear daily ChoCh at $2,790 in October 2024 — the first break of a higher low after months of uptrending. The reversal led to a 200-dollar drop over the following six weeks.
